Sono ben 11 le candidature che Il signore degli anelli: il ritorno del re ha avuto per la prossiama edizione della notte degli Oscar, che si terrà il 19 febbraio, quest'anno in anticipo di un mese rispetto alle precedenti edizioni. Ma anche il film di Peter Weir, Master & Comamnder non scherza, sono infatti dieci le Nomination ottenute dal film con Russell Crowe.Sorprendono, felicemente, le due candidature ottenute da Sofia Coppola per Lost  in traslation, per il film e per la regia, film che Sentieri selvaggi avava già adorato alla scorsa Mostra del cinema di Venezia.  4 sono invece le candidature per il grandissimo Mystic River, di Clint Eastwood, mentre sorprende anche il film di Gary Ross, Seabiscquit, che si aggiudica ben 5 Nomination. Per la categoria del migliore attore si contenderanno la gara Bill Murray,  con Lost in Translation, Sean Penn per Mystic River , Ben Kingsley per La casa di sabbia e nebbia, Jude Law per Cold Mountain e Johnny Depp per La maledizione della prima luna. Tra le attrici: Naomi Watts per 21 Grammi, Diane Keaton per Something's Gotta Give, Charlize Theron per Monster, Samantha Morton per In America eKeisha Castle-Hughes per La ragazza delle balene .
