Films from the South Festival – Oslo 20a edizione

Mentre Oslo si prepara ad essere avvolta dal buio invernale e dalla neve, un pubblico composto in buona parte da immigrati di prima e seconda generazione sta seguendo la 20a edizione del festival internazionale Films From the South, occasione pressoché unica per mantenere un filo diretto con le trasformazioni culturali nel proprio luogo d’origine. Nel corso del festival, il ministro dello sviluppo norvegese, Erik Solheim, ha annunciato l’istituzione di un fondo per il finanziamento di produzioni cinematografiche in Asia, Africa e America Latina allo scopo di proteggere e favorire la libertà d’opinione in paesi dove essa è messa in pericolo dalle autorità o da conflitti in corso.

Il programma include più di 100 film e documentari provenienti da una varietà di paesi extraeuropei e si propone di abituare il pubblico norvegese, avido consumatore di blockbusters americani, a pellicole che richiedono un certo impegno per essere apprezzate. Infatti, oltre a forma e contenuti spesso alieni e difficili da metanbolizzare, si aggiunge la difficoltà di seguire le pellicole in lingua originale con i sottotitoli generalmente in inglese. Quest’anno i film in concorso includono tra gli altri il coreano The housemaid di Im Sang-Soo (dramma sociale che trae ispirazione dall’omonimo classico di Kim Ki-young del 1960); She, a Chinese del cinese Xiaolu Guo, già vincitore del Pardo d’oro al festival di Locarno nel 2009; il film-documentario Waste Land, di Lucy Walker, su come un fotografo trasforma le vite di di un gruppo di abitanti delle favelas che abitualmente raccolgono spazzatura in un’enorme discarica ai margini di Rio de Janeiro; infine, l’ultimo film del regista Cinese Zhang Yimou, A woman, a gun and a noodle shop, remake di Blood Simple dei fratelli Cohen. Oltre ai premi ufficiali decretati dalla giuria, esiste anche un premio del pubblico che garantisce la distribuzione del film prescelto attraverso il circuito cinematografico norvegese, e la sua successiva uscita in DVD. Uno dei film che è risultato tra i più graditi in sala è A brand new life di Ounie Lecomte, regista francese nata in Corea. Il film, in parte autobiografico, narra la storia di una bambina che, dopo essere stata affidata senza preavviso dal padre ad un orfanotrofio, rifiuta l’idea dell’abbandono. L’opera segna il debutto della regista, ed ha già incassato numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali. Fuori concorso ci sono poi le anteprime di film che il pubblico norvegese avrà la possibilità di vedere in sala quest’inverno come Biutiful, di Alejandro González Iñárritu, con cui Javier Bardem ha vinto la Palma d’Oro a Cannes; il lento ma suggestivo Honey, del regista turco Semith Kaplanoglu, già vincitore del Festival di Berlino, e Uomini di Dio, vincitore del Gran premio della giuria a Cannes in uscita in questi giorni anche in Italia.
Forse meno cònsono ai gusti scandinavi è risultato il vincitore delle Palma d’Oro a Cannes: Lo zio Bonmee che si ricorda le vite precedenti, un film che per essere apprezzato richiede che ci si abbandoni all’atmosfera sognante piena di misteriosi simbolismi piuttosto che accanirsi a cercare spiegazioni che il regista, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, volutamente non fornisce. Per festeggiare il suo ventennale, il festival quest’anno ha inoltre presentato una rassegna dei 12 tesori della filmografia mondiale finora restaurati grazie alla World Cinema Foundation, creata da Martin Scorsese nel 2007. L’evento-clou all’interno della rassegna è stata la proiezione in anteprima mondiale di Limite, film muto del brasiliano Mario Peixoto risalente al 1930, per il quale è stata appositamente creata una colonna sonora. La cerimonia di gala si è svolta nella suggestiva cornice del nuovo teatro dell’Opera, uno spettacolare edificio costruito sull’acqua e ricoperto interamente di marmo di Carrara. All’evento hanno partecipato il principe Håkon, erede al trono norvegese, e l’attrice norvegese più famosa al mondo: Liv Ullmann. Nel corso del festival, il ministro dello sviluppo norvegese, Erik Solheim, ha annunciato l’istituzione di un fondo per il finanziamento di produzioni cinematografiche in Asia, Africa e America Latina. Al fondo verranno destinati annualmente l’equivalente di 345.000 dollari allo scopo di proteggere e favorire la libertà d’opinione in paesi dove essa è messa in pericolo dalle autorità o da conflitti in corso. “Questo fondo non è pensato per la cultura che nutre se stessa, ma per produzioni che esplorino nuovi terreni, e certamente anche per quelle che sollevano temi controversi,” ha dichiarato Solheim nel corso di una conferenza stampa. Con questi presupposti e con il nuovo fondo da gestire, Films from the South potrebbe nei prossimi anni apportare un interessante contributo al cinema nei paesi in via di sviluppo e avvicinare ulteriormente il pubblico norvegese ad opere che incuriosiscono, ma che ancora oggi sono prevalentemente relegate all’ambito e alla durata del festival.
